Outdoor Guiding

The outdoor guiding trips are a true experience of how adventurous and freeing climbing can be.  New Heights provides this full experience.  We offer day and multi-day trips teaching basic climbing skills, sport leading and traditional leading.  If you are thinking that climbing is too hard, let me reassure you there is climbing for everyone.  Our trips will most likely land us at Arkansas' Sam's throne or Horseshoe Canyon.  We ask all our students attending a guided trip to obtain the basic safety skills first: rewoven figure eight knot w/ fisherman back-up, belaying skills, and can properly put on a harness.

Basic Guiding:

Teaching students the basics in movement and top rope set-up.  This class is really just about getting out there and doing a ton of climbing...........that's what it is all about.  Our instructors focus on foot work, stemming, counterforce, energy conservation, and basic crack climbing skills.  In addition to movement our instructors will demonstrate anchor systems for top ropes.  This course is great for families and small groups wanting to get some exposure.  Minimum class size of three with a maximum of six at 125.00/person/weekend.

Private lessons are available at 200.00/weekend.

Course dates:

Sept 30th & Oct. 1st, Oct. 14th & 15th, 28th & 29th, Nov. 4th & 5th, 11th & 12th, Dec 9th & 10th, Jan. 13th & 14th, 20th & 21st.

Sport leading:

This is an introduction to "sport" lead climbing.  All students must have their own harness and rock climbing shoes.  Learning to sport lead opens up many areas across the country for the aspiring climber.  Learning how to lead belay, clipping bolts, and lowering off are the main objectives of the class.  Learning to lead belay is more involved and any weakness in the technique increases the likelihood that a leader would be injured.  Our instructors will demonstrate proper and improper clipping techniques and explain the dangers of clipping incorrectly.  When should a leader lower off or rappel?  Where should the rope be while climbing?  These types of questions are discussed during the trip.  How to fall.  Minimum number of students is three and maximum of six at 175.00/person/weekend.

Private lessons are available at 250.00/weekend.

Course dates: Sept. 23rd & 24th, Oct. 7th & 8th, 21st & 22nd, Nov. 4th & 5th, 18th & 19th, Dec. 2nd & 3rd, 16th & 17th

Traditional leading:

This course offers the fundamentals of traditional lead climbing.  All students are required to have their own harness, rock climbing shoes, belay device, and extra HMS style locking carabineers.  The students will second numerous routes examining the placement of passive and active gear.  Instructors will discuss aspects of placing protection like:  rock quality, surface area contact, speed, directional forces.  The instructors will discuss equalizing placements as well as anchors/belay stances.  Rope management as well as aspects of single or double rope ascents.  Belaying devices: manual devices (ATC, Tuber, plates) and auto locking devices.  The course is limited to two students and is 225.00/person/weekend.

Private lessons available at 350.00/weekend.

Course dates:  Oct 14th & 15th, Oct 28th & 29th, Nov 11th & 12th, Dec 9th & 10th, Jan 13th &14th.
